Dispersion in gemology is the separation of white light into its component colors as it passes through a gemstone. This optical effect creates flashes of spectral colors, often called fire, that can be seen when a gemstone is moved under suitable lighting.
Dispersion is an important factor in a gemstone’s visual appeal, particularly in diamonds and other faceted gems.
How Dispersion Works or Appears in a Gemstone
When white light enters a gemstone, different wavelengths of light refract by slightly different amounts. This separates the light into colors, similar to the effect of a prism.
The amount of dispersion depends on the gemstone’s optical properties, while the visibility of its fire also depends on the cut, facet arrangement, lighting, and viewing angle. For example, a well-cut diamond may display distinct flashes of colored light as it moves.
Why Dispersion Matters When Evaluating Diamonds and Gemstones
Dispersion contributes to a gemstone’s brilliance of color, but it is different from brilliance, which refers to the return of white light, and scintillation, which describes flashes of light and dark as the stone or observer moves.
Diamond is well known for its noticeable fire, while gemstones such as sphene (titanite) can display even stronger dispersion. However, greater dispersion alone does not make a gemstone more beautiful; overall appearance depends on several optical and design factors.
How Gemologists Observe or Test Dispersion
Gemologists observe dispersion by examining a faceted gemstone under suitable lighting and looking for spectral flashes as the stone is tilted. Optical measurements can also help characterize a gemstone’s refractive properties.
Dispersion should not be used alone to identify a gemstone. Gemologists consider it alongside properties such as refractive index, birefringence, specific gravity, and spectral characteristics.
