Electroforming is a jewelry-manufacturing process in which metal is deposited onto a prepared form or model through an electrochemical process. The deposited metal gradually builds a hollow or lightweight metal shell, allowing jewelers to create shapes that would be difficult, heavy, or costly to produce as solid metal.
How Electroforming Is Performed
The process begins with a form, often called a mandrel, that is shaped to the desired design. If the form is not electrically conductive, its surface is coated with a conductive material. The prepared piece is placed in an electrolytic bath, where electric current causes metal ions—commonly copper, silver, or gold depending on the application—to deposit onto the surface. The layer is built to the required thickness and the underlying form may then be removed when the design calls for a hollow structure.
Where Electroforming Is Used in Jewelry Production
Electroforming is useful for sculptural jewelry, large statement pieces, organic forms, beads, pendants, and designs where visual volume is desired without the weight of a fully solid piece. It can also reproduce complex surface detail from a model.
Benefits and Limitations of Electroforming
Its main advantages are lower weight, material efficiency, and the ability to create intricate three-dimensional forms. However, the finished shell can be thinner than conventionally fabricated metal, so wall thickness, structural support, finishing, and wear points must be carefully engineered. Quality depends on consistent deposition and proper surface preparation.
